Honing is a specialized grinding process performed using grouped abrasive material segments. During the process, the active grains of the honing tool come into contact with the surface of the workpiece while it rotates slowly, and the honing tool moves along the generatrix of the surface of revolution with alternating motions of small amplitude and relatively high frequency. As the honing tool rotates, it also performs an oscillating vertical up-and-down movement.

The honing operation is carried out on engine cylinders, hydraulic piston housings, gun barrels, brake cylinders (both master and wheel cylinders), clutch cylinders, hydraulic controls and valves, screw dies, among others.

External honing is applied in the machining of shafts.
